Cigar Box Guitars
Some of the most desirable cigar box guitars are made by Daddy Mojo a cigar box guitar maker based in Montreal Canada. Mojo’s clients include Wilco, Edge of U2, Band of Horses, Rick Hawirth, Nels Cline, Band of Horses, Broken Social Scene, Counting Crows and Bloodshot Bill.
Daddy Mojo
The tradition of Cigar Box guitars began in the late nineteenth century when those too poor to buy a real guitar would fashion a guitar or fiddle from old cigar boxes. The rise of Jug and Skiffle bands together with the American depression ensured that home made instruments were still a necessity for many musicians.
Of course, Daddy Mojo have evolved the D.I.Y. ethic of the depression era into an art form and their range of cigar box guitars are both beautiful and playable instruments. Each instrument is portable, virtually indestructible and has a unique sound and personality.
Resophonic
The Resophonic features an all cedar sound box, hand carved Mahogany neck with adjustable trussrod, Rosewood or Ebony fingerboard, slotted headstock with Ebony headplate and mother of pearl star inlays. Grover tuners and a hand tooled resonator cover plate plus a tailpeice with punched out star motif and Quarterman 6 inch aluminium cone complete the look – magnetic pickups are optional. The Resophonic model is available in a tenor, six string, as well as a nine string and you may choose from a Sunburst finish or “natural aged Cedar” patina. Resophonics come with a custom Daddy Mojo hardshell case.
Dolorosa
The Dolorosa is a 6 string box finished in vintage tobacco sunbusrt with a Sacred Heart silkscreen design and a choice of Florentine cutouts or bullet chamber sound holes and a mini humbucker in the bridge position. A maple neck, rosewood fingerboard and bridge, bone nut and saddle as well as mother of pearl dot markers make this a highly versatile cigar box model for the guitarist.
Clydesdale
The Clydesdale is a four, five or 6 string model with two mini humbucker pick-ups, florentine sound holes, a maple neck, rosewood fingerboard and bridge, a bone nut and saddle as well as mother of pearl dot markers.
Stove Pipe
The Stove Pipe cigar box is an all black and chrome six string with a maple neck, rosewood fingerboard and bridge, bone nut and saddle as well as mother of pearl dots. Two HOT mini-humbuckers (and a three way switch) give this cigar box plenty of power.
Standard & Standard Deluxe
The standard models are 4-string fully fretted Spanish Cedar box guitars. The Standard has a maple neck, and a piezo pick-up for amplification purposes. The “Deluxe” Standard model has a rosewood fingerboard, maple neck, mother of pearl dots and a “hot” mini humbucker in the neck position. All Daddy Mojo “Standard Deluxe” cigar box guitars are equipped with a maple neck, Spanish Cedar box as well as a magnetic pick-up for amplification purposes.
